Great Southern Hotel
The Great Southern Hotel is a 3-story masonry/poured concrete building with a wood-roof frame on Block 40. Reconstruction of the historic Great Southern Hotel of Hollywood, FL, which was the anchor of the city and one of the two well-known buildings designed by Joseph Young and helps maintain a connection from the beach to downtown Hollywood. The original building was stuccoed with barrel tiles along the roofline and striped awnings above the windows. The Great Southern Hotel withstood the 1926 hurricane and became a temporary hospital for the injured and was then converted many times into commercial spaces before it became structurally unsound and began to fall in. Peacock Architects’ reconstruction included work on masonry units, wrought iron and aluminum restoration, rood window and entrance repairs, restoration of the structural system, and required work as directed by codes as well as resilience to natural hazards.
