A New Chapter of History for Delray Full Service Adult Education Center

In the heart of Delray Beach, Florida, a transformation is underway at the historic Delray Full Service Adult Education Center. With roots tracing back to the iconic George Washington Carver High School, this site is undergoing a remarkable renovation and preservation effort led by Peacock Architects.

The project entails the demolition of seven campus buildings, while four original structures are being carefully preserved. Among these preserved buildings is the gymnasium, set to undergo a complete renovation. Once completed, the gymnasium will be transformed into a multipurpose facility serving both the school and the wider community. It will feature a historic interpretive room showcasing the Carver High logo, along with three multipurpose rooms and a testing lab.

Adding to the site's revitalization is the construction of a new 20,000 square-foot adult education building. This two-story structure will complement the neighboring Village Academy and house essential facilities such as a construction lab, health science lab, information technology lab, and general classrooms. Additionally, eight modular units will be introduced, accommodating a cosmetology lab, more information technology labs, and additional classrooms.

The significance of this project extends beyond bricks and mortar. Carver High School holds a special place in the community's history, serving as the only high school in Delray Beach open to black students until its closure in 1970. The preservation of elements like the gymnasium and original classroom buildings on Southwest Third Street pays homage to this rich heritage.

The renovation was already completed and they received their TCO, temporary certificate of occupancy, in March. They are currently using the buildings and enrolling students for the next semester. Once enrollment began, we witnessed an overwhelming flood of registrants, underscoring the high demand for this campus. The final CO, certificate of occupancy, is set to be issued in the next couple of months.

As the project nears completion, anticipation grows within the community. The new Village Center will not only offer educational opportunities for adults but also provide career preparation and technical courses for high school students. Courses ranging from computer science skills to advanced manufacturing will be on offer, aligning with the vision of creating marketable skills for students.

The multipurpose cultural arts facility within the renovated gymnasium will serve as a hub for educational and community events, symbolizing the site's transition from a relic of the past to a vibrant center of learning and engagement.

With work on track to be substantially completed in the coming months, the Delray Full Service Adult Education Center stands poised to reclaim its position as a cornerstone of educational excellence and community pride. This project represents not only a physical transformation but also a testament to the power of preserving history while embracing progress. Stay tuned as this historic journey unfolds, marking a new chapter in Delray Beach's story.
