No Tricks, Just Treats: Inside Barry-Callebaut’s Award-Winning Chocolate Factory Expansion

For Halloween, we’re taking a look back at one of our sweetest projects at Peacock Architects: the 30,000-square-foot expansion of the Barry Callebaut Chocolate Factory in Hendersonville, NC. This addition, built by Cooper Construction Company, has doubled the factory’s production capacity, creating a dynamic, efficient space for chocolate-making and enhancing both production and the work environment for the team.

A Transformation in Chocolate Production

Barry Callebaut is renowned worldwide for its high-quality, decorative chocolate products that add a finishing touch to desserts. To meet the rising demand for its chocolates, the expansion was essential. We partnered with Barry Callebaut to design a facility that not only boosts production but also enhances quality control to ensure every piece of chocolate meets the highest standards. This facility, recognized by Varco Pruden Buildings in their annual Hall of Fame Awards, now stands as a hallmark of innovation and excellence in industrial design.

A Safer, More Efficient Workplace

Beyond production, the expansion prioritizes employee safety and comfort. We integrated features like new shoe-changing areas to support safety protocols, expanded locker spaces, and added restrooms with vestibules to increase convenience for staff. The facility also now includes a renovated office area and a dedicated training room, promoting continuous learning and collaboration among the Barry Callebaut team.

An Award-Winning Design

The Barry Callebaut Hendersonville Warehouse Facility was selected as a Warehouse Category winner in Varco Pruden Buildings' annual Hall of Fame Awards. This highly competitive award celebrates the work of VP Builders that reflect architectural excellence, end-use innovation, and creative design. The new 25,000-square-foot warehouse addition includes a high-pile storage area, 12 geothermal wells, receiving docks, LED lighting, and a skyliner roof insulation system, designed to optimize both functionality and sustainability.
